OKLAHOMA CITY — A new study has found that systemic barriers to voting on tribal lands contribute to substantial disparities in Native American turnout, particularly for presidential elections. The study, released Nov. 19 by the Brennan Center for Justice, looked at 21 states with federally recognized tribal lands that have a population of at least 5,000 and where more than 20% of residents identify as American Indian or Alaska Native. Researchers found that between 2012 and 2022, voter participation in federal elections was 7 percentage points lower in midterms and 15 percentage points lower in presidential elections than among those living off tribal lands in the same states. Chelsea Jones, a researcher on the study, said the study suggests some barriers may be insurmountable in predominately Native communities due to a lack of adequate polling places or access to early and mail-in ballots. Once the fixed-shape antenna is manufactured, its characteristics are limited, which limits many of its operating parameters. To facilitate new realms of operational agility, a shape-changing antenna could enable a wider array of radio-frequency (RF) bands. Such shape-shifting antennae could replace multiple antennas, dynamically adapt to spectrum availability, and change shape in response to short—and long-range communications. Researchers turned to shape memory alloys to advance the manufacturing of such dynamic hardware. These shape memory alloys are metallic materials that return to their original shape after being deformed when heated, stressed, or strained. For reference, these alloys are used in orthodontic wires, vascular stents, and bone implants for control surfaces in spacecraft. Materials scientist Andy Lennon had already used nitinol – a shape memory alloy of nickel and titanium, to create coils extending down through a person’s esophagus to assist with heart imaging. Lennon and his team were working on shaping nitinol into complex shapes. However, these alloys need periodic mechanical processing called cold work. “ Doing an extreme amount of cold work would defeat the whole point, ” Lennon said. “ If you take that complex shape and pass it through a die to stretch it out, you’re back to a wire. “ Therefore, researchers at APL started working on challenges associated with scalable additive manufacturing and later applied these techniques to craft shape-changing materials. The team altered the ratio of nickel and titanium to create a shape-changing horn antenna. Though the antenna expanded and contracted, the deformation was relatively rigid and challenging. “ It turned out to be a really complicated design, and it didn’t work as well as I would have liked ,” Hollenbeck said. New way to make LEDs brighter and more efficient Learning from the previous experiments, the lead author integrated nitinol with two-way shape memory. Here, the alloys can be cooled and heated between two remembered shapes. After collaborating with electrical engineers at Force Projection Sector, the team developed an antenna that, when cool, resembled a flat spiral disk but became a cone spiral when heated. However, heating the spiral emerged as another challenge. Researchers were keen to find a way to heat the antenna accurately enough to change shape without burning the internal structures. To solve this issue, the team had to invent a new power line. “ For peak heating, the power line has to handle a lot of current, ” Sherburne said. Astronomers from the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) have spotted far ultra violet (FUV) emissions from novae for the first time in the neighbouring Andromeda galaxy. The ultraviolet emissions from novae are a special class of transient astronomical event that causes the sudden appearance of a bright, apparently new star that slowly fades over weeks or months, during their outburst. The IIA team used ultraviolet imaging telescope (UVIT/AstroSat) data of the Andromeda galaxy from public archives, to look for FUV emission from novae during their dormancy. AstroSat is India’s first dedicated space astronomy observatory and the UVIT is one of the primary payloads which was developed by IIA. According to the Department of Science and Technology, the team stumbled upon the novae around their eruption phase. It added that the team, consisting of Judhajeet Basu (IIA and Pondicherry University), Krishnendu S. (IIA and Amrita University), Sudhanshu Barway (IIA), Shatakshi Chamoli (IIA and Pondicherry University), and G. C. Anupama (IIA), also discovered ultraviolet emission from 42 novae, a special class of stellar explosions, and even caught four of them in the act of outburst itself. The department said that this could help scientists study these interacting binary star systems in our nearest neighbor galaxy at different phases of their life, some piling up matter from their companion, while others spewing it into space. “UVIT’s fine spatial resolution and unique capability to observe simultaneously in far UV and near UV helped us investigate the fluxes in different UV bands, which led to the detection of accretion disks in some of these systems, 2.5 million light years away. The brighter the disk, the more rapidly it is consuming its companion’s matter. We also studied how the flux from these discs changes with time, and as per our expectations, the accretion process was found to be stable in these systems.” Mr. Basu, a PhD student at IIA, who led the project, said.
