Progressive Democrats are criticizing President Joe Biden 's decision to pardon his son, Hunter Biden, instead of those they say are suffering from mass incarceration after months of pleas to the president before he leaves office. On Sunday, the president announced he signed a pardon for the first son, who was convicted of tax and gun felonies this year. This was a sharp reversal of the president's previous position that he would not do so, with his decision receiving admonishments from Democrats and outrage from Republicans. Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), a vocal critic of the president over the Israel-Hamas war, shared a post on X that called on him to pardon tens of thousands of people in federal prison for drug offenses. "This," Tlaib said , with the post asking, "When are their pardons coming?" Rep. Summer Lee (D-PA), who joined over 60 Democratic lawmakers calling on the president to grant blanket clemency to thousands incarcerated in federal prison in late November, said Tuesday that she agreed Hunter Biden faced "harsh sentencing and unfair treatment." "But so do thousands of others, disproportionately black folks," Lee said . Led by Reps. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA), Jim Clyburn (D-SC), and Mary Gay Scanlon (D-PA), the Democrats sent a letter to the president asking him for pardons for the elderly, chronically ill, those on death row, and others to be completed before Jan. 20, 2025. The president has granted 25 pardons and 132 commutations out of the thousands of applications the administration has received since 2021. “Now is the time to use your clemency authority to rectify unjust and unnecessary criminal laws passed by Congress and draconian sentences given by judges,” the lawmakers wrote in November. Prior to the president's pardon of his son, Pressley posted that mass incarceration is "a crisis and clemency is part of the solution." However, popular progressives such as Pressley and Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Mark Pocan (D-WI) have not publicly commented on the Hunter Biden pardon, with a Hill aide telling the Washington Examiner that not many progressives are too bothered by the actual pardon itself. "There’s a collective shrug among Hill progressives," the aide said. "Trump did this, Biden’s following the trend.” In his first administration, President-elect Donald Trump granted 144 pardons and 94 commutations. Trump pardoned Charles Kushner, the father of his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and multiple allies convicted in special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation. Some Democrats are in favor of the president's decision, accusing the investigation into Hunter Biden as politically motivated. The president, in his pardon announcement, said his son was “treated differently” and that "raw politics has infected this process, and it led to a miscarriage of justice." One House Democrat told the Washington Examiner, "Personally, I don't like the pardon system, but I understand it's part of the constitution." However, the lawmaker said, "If a president is going to issue a pardon, then this is a good one." "Hunter Biden was a target for political reasons, so being pardoned through a political tool seems appropriate," the House Democrat said. Several other congressional Democrats and state leaders have leaped into the fray to criticize the president. Sen. Peter Welch (D-VT) called the move "understandable" but "unwise." Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) said the president should have used his pardon power elsewhere. "Presidents have the right to pardon who they want, but I fundamentally believe pardons should be used to right the wrongs of the past — not for family members or to hand out political favors," Baldwin said in a statement . Sen. Michael Bennet (D-CO), once considered a centrist Democrat whose stances have shifted more liberal with Colorado's electorate over the years, said Tuesday Biden's decision to pardon his son "put personal interest ahead of duty" and "further erodes Americans' faith that the justice system is fair and equal for all." Gov. Jared Polis (D-CO) said, as a father, he understands the president's decision. However, he said in a post to X that he is "disappointed" the president put his family "ahead of the country." CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER "This is a bad precedent that could be abused by later Presidents and will sadly tarnish his reputation," Polis said. "When you become President, your role is Pater familias of the nation. Hunter brought the legal trouble he faced on himself, and one can sympathize with his struggles while also acknowledging that no one is above the law, not a President and not a President’s son." The Washington Examiner reached out to numerous progressive lawmakers for comment.A ninth U.S. telecoms firm has been confirmed to have been hacked as part of a sprawling Chinese espionage campaign that gave officials in Beijing access to private texts and phone conversations of an unknown number of Americans, a top White House official said Friday. Biden administration officials said this month that at least eight telecommunications companies, as well as dozens of nations, had been affected by the Chinese hacking blitz known as Salt Typhoon. > 24/7 San Diego news stream: Watch NBC 7 free wherever you are But deputy national security adviser Anne Neuberger told reporters Friday that a ninth victim had been identified after the administration released guidance to companies about how to hunt for Chinese culprits in their networks. The update from Neuberger is the latest development in a massive hacking operation that has alarmed national security officials, exposed cybersecurity vulnerabilities in the private sector and laid bare China 's hacking sophistication. The hackers compromised the networks of telecommunications companies to obtain customer call records and gain access to the private communications of what officials have said is a a limited number of individuals. Though the FBI has not publicly identified any of the victims, officials believe senior U.S. government officials and prominent political figures are among those whose whose communications were accessed. Neuberger said Friday that officials did not yet have a precise sense how many Americans overall were affected by Salt Typhoon, in part because the Chinese were careful about their techniques, but that a “large number" were in the Washington-Virginia area. Officials believe the goal of the hackers was to identify who owned the phones and, if they were “government targets of interest,” spy on their texts and phone calls, she said. U.S. & World Chinese workers found in ‘slavery-like conditions' in Brazil taken to hotels as probe begins Canadian Cabinet ministers say they had ‘productive' meeting with Trump team The FBI said most of the people targeted by the hackers are "primarily involved in government or political activity.” Neuberger said the episode highlighted the need for required cybersecurity practices in the telecommunications industry, something the Federal Communications Commission is to take up at a meeting next month. In addition, she said, the government was planning additional actions in coming weeks in response to the hacking campaign, though she did not say what they were. “We know that voluntary cyber security practices are inadequate to protect against China, Russia and Iran hacking of our critical infrastructure,” she said. The Chinese government has denied responsibility for the hacking.N. GTA 6 Has Some Major Competition In 2025, And It’s Not What You ThinkThe Los Angeles Dodgers and Dustin May have agreed to $2.135 million to avoid arbitration, according to Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic. This settlement could pay big dividends for the current World Champions in 2025. The Dodgers and Dustin May settled at $2.135 million to avoid arbitration, sources tell The Athletic. — Fabian Ardaya (@FabianArdaya) November 22, 2024 Dodgers, Dustin May Reach Settlement to Avoid Arbitration Multiple Injuries Dustin May has some of the most electric pitches in the Los Angeles organization. However, he has had trouble staying healthy. In fact, May hasn’t seen a big league mound since the middle of 2023. The right-hander was projected to return the latter half of the 2024 season, after rehabbing from his second Tommy John surgery. Unfortunately, he had to have emergency surgery to repair a torn esophagus, sidelining him for the rest of the year. Options for 2025 The Dodgers are planning to go for a six-man starting rotation for the 2025 season. This would be a response to the avalanche of injuries the Dodgers pitchers experienced this year It would not only limit the amount of innings for Tyler Glasnow , Clayton Kershaw , and Shohei Ohtani , who will all be coming off injuries. The strategy will also preserve the regular five days of rest for Yoshinobu Yamamoto and, perhaps Roki Sasaki , should he choose to sign with Los Angeles . It is not hard to see this plan benefiting May as well. Another Scenario With May’s filthy arsenal, one could also easily envision a spot in the bullpen for the right-hander. The run on his sinker and the drop on his breaking ball is a devastating combination. The Dodgers could use a high-leverage right arm in the late innings of ballgames, given that Daniel Hudson announced his retirement . Blake Treinen and Joe Kelly are also free agents and may choose to go elsewhere. Brusdar Graterol will miss the first half of 2025 coming off shoulder surgery . If May is healthy and anywhere near as effective as he has shown he can be, the Dodgers have to be elated that the right-hander will be an available weapon at their disposal. The only question left is, where will he be deployed? This article first appeared on Last Word On Sports and was syndicated with permission.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — San Francisco 49ers star running back Christian McCaffrey will not need surgery on his injured right knee but he will miss the rest of the regular season. Coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday that McCaffrey will be out at least six weeks after injuring his posterior cruciate ligament in a loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday night . McCaffrey will be placed on injured reserve for the second time this season after previously missing the first eight games with Achilles tendinitis. “I just feel for him,” Shanahan said. “It was a real frustrating year for him. He worked his ass off to get back to this point and I think he was really feeling good and about to take off and just had that real unfortunate injury last night. I know he’s as crushed as anyone, but he’ll get through this. He’s a hell of a player, a hell of a person and an unbelievable 49er. He’ll be back stronger than ever next year to help us.” San Francisco (5-7) sits alone in last place in the NFC West standings, two wins behind division-leading Seattle, and in jeopardy of missing the playoffs a year after losing to Kansas City in the Super Bowl. The 49ers also lost McCaffrey's backup to an injury with Jordan Mason also set to go on injured reserve after suffering a high ankle sprain in the game against the Bills. It has been a frustrating season for McCaffrey, who won the 2023 AP Offensive Player of the Year then signed a lucrative contract extension in the offseason. McCaffrey injured his Achilles tendon early in training camp and missed the first eight games of the season. He rushed for just 149 yards on 43 carries in his first three games back as he struggled to get back to form. He looked much better early Sunday night with seven carries for 53 yards, including a 19-yarder that was his longest of the season. He appeared to hurt his knee on an 18-yard run in the second quarter. He then went down immediately on his next carry on a sweep to the left on a snow-slicked field for a 5-yard loss. Mason had played well as McCaffrey's replacement, rushing for 789 yards and averaging 5.2 yards per carry this season. San Francisco will now turn to rookie Isaac Guerendo and promote Patrick Taylor from the practice squad. Shanahan said the team will also look to add another running back to the mix. In other injury news from the game, defensive lineman Kevin Givens tore his pectoral muscle and will be out for the rest of the season. Shanahan said cornerback Deommodore Lenoir should be back at practice Wednesday after missing the game with a knee injury and that stars Nick Bosa (hip, oblique) and Trent Williams (ankle) will be evaluated as the week goes on. Bosa and Williams have both missed the last two games. Williams has also been dealing with family tragedy as his wife announced on Instagram that she gave birth to stillborn Trenton O’Brien Williams Jr. on Nov. 24. Sondra Williams also wrote that she was initially pregnant with twins and lost the other child earlier in the pregnancy. Shanahan said Williams spent time with his family last week but is trying to get back to play. “He was there at the hospital with her and got to meet him and say bye,” Shanahan said. “Then he had to cremate him on Friday. So he’s been dealing with that and he’s working through it. We’re all just trying to be there for him through it all.” NOTES: OL Aaron Banks and DT Jordan Elliott remain in the concussion protocol. ... LB Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles (knee) is day to day. ... LB Dre Greenlaw will get more work this week after his practice window was opened last week for the first time since he tore his Achilles in the Super Bowl. ... S Talanoa Hufanga (wrist) will have his IR practice window opened this week.
