The campaign has also put into action widespread awareness campaigns, building on over 700 initiatives carried out by LALIGA and Spanish clubs over the past decade targeting discrimination, and implemented innovative projects like M.O.O.D. (Monitor for the Observation of Hate in Sport), an independent AI tool for tracking hate speech in sports-related conversations online. This long-term commitment and initiatives have borne fruit in the fight against racism. In June 2024, the first ever-conviction for racist insults at a football match in Spain was handed down as a result of a complaint filed directly by LALIGA to the courts, while a comparative analysis of over 21 million social media conversations across the 2023/24 season showed a 45% decrease in racist comments when compared to a comparable period in the 2022/23 season when M.O.O.D. tool began collecting data. Saturday’s event not only showcased Nigeria’s rich footballing culture. The tournament emphasized the vital and very real connection between LALIGA’s global initiatives and grassroots football, serving as a backdrop for panel discussions with media and stakeholders, exploring how football can foster social cohesion and combat discrimination. The S&P/TSX composite index was up 57.82 points at 24,806.80. In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 177.64 points at 43,084.59. The S&P 500 index was up 43.11 points at 6,017.18, while the Nasdaq composite was up 210.74 points at 19,975.62. The Canadian dollar traded for 69.50 cents US compared with 69.47 cents US on Monday. The February crude oil contract was up 91 cents at US$70.15 per barrel and the February natural gas contract was up 13 cents at US$3.48 per mmBTU. The February gold contract was down US$1.10 at US$2,627.10 an ounce and the March copper contract was up two cents at US$4.11 a pound. Just before 7:30 a.m., Shrewsbury police responded to reports that two people had fallen through the ice at Dean Park Pond, the department said in a release. Police officers and firefighters from Shrewsbury were joined by EMS personnel from Worcester at the scene. Upon arrival, they found two people who had fallen through the ice, but were skating toward the shoreline. They had been ice skating on the pond and fell through somewhere near the middle, officials said. First responders helped them to the shoreline and transported them to local hospitals for treatment. The Arlington Fire Department said in a social media post that firefighters responded to an ice rescue call Monday at the Arlington Reservoir. “The only safe ice is indoor ice at the rink,” the Arlington Fire Department said in its statement. A Lexington official told Boston 25 News that a teenage boy fell through the ice at the reservoir around 4 p.m. The boy’s father was with him, but was unable to pull him out. First responders from Arlington and Lexington successfully saved the boy. He was reportedly evaluated by paramedics and is expected to recover. Arlington and Lexington officials could not be reached for comment Tuesday. Shrewsbury police offered a series of tips to avoid dangerous situations like these. Clear, blue ice is strong and usually safe, while white, opaque ice is weaker and thinner, they said. Gray or dark ice is unsafe, as this indicates that the surface is melting. People should check for cracks, slush, or open water before venturing out onto any ice, officials said. They should avoid going near any areas with moving water. Carrying ice picks, ropes, and whistles is encouraged. People going out on the ice should never do so alone, they added.
